Sustainable heat supply with anergy in Vienna-Hernals

The city of Vienna is pursuing the goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040. In peripheral districts such as Hernals, where no central district heating is planned, local anergy networks are becoming increasingly important for heating conversion. These represent an innovative, sustainable form of heating and cooling supply in which several buildings jointly use environmental heat sources such as geothermal energy, groundwater, or air.

Goal: Systematic preparation for the implementation of anergy networks in existing areas

For systematic preparation, two to three start cells are being identified in Vienna-Hernals and their owners are being actively involved in the process. Technical, legal, and organizational framework conditions are being analyzed. The focus is on an integrative approach that gives equal consideration to technical, social, and legal aspects. The complex ownership structure in Hernals requires new cooperation models, which are being tested in the project.

Planned results: 10-step plan, workshops, analyses, and consultations

The key result will be a practical, transferable 10-step plan - from the initial project idea to organizational and business models to obtaining bids and selecting the best bidder. Accompanying workshops, analyses, and consultations will promote structured decision-making. The project lays the foundation for demonstration projects and the broader rollout of anergy networks in Vienna – as a contribution to the heat transition and affordable, climate-neutral urban development.
