Energy
The issues energy and climate protection are central challenges for business, society and ecology. The question of future energy is especially pressuring: the knowledge of limited fossil fuels on one hand and the requirements of climate protection on the other demand a trend reversal of our energy system that is currently based on fossil energy and continuously increasing consumption. The problem is obvious: higher energy efficiency and a higher share of renewable energy! However, what is easily said is subject to many challenges and conflicts on a tangible implementation level. A lot of the difficulties can be overcome by handling the economic, social and ecological context and by effectively communicating; exactly this is OGUT’s function. OGUT’s mission in the thematic focus energy is
- to provide professional information and strategic inputs;
- to initiate essential and meaningful developments and innovations;
- to act as a platform for strategic processes of businesses, public administration and environmental organisations (especially within our members).
Current projects
Energy-Consumption In The Service-Sector
The quality of energy-data for the service-sector is very poor, at least compared to the residential sector. In the context of this project detailed energy consumption data of up to 12,000 service companies will be gathered and processed. The types of energy use will be analysed and benchmarks will be set up.
Energy-Relevant Aspects of Settlement Patterns And Types Of Residential Buildings (ZERsiedelt)
The following items are planned within the project: 1. Balance of energy-use (grey energy) in connection with the construction of buildings and infrastructure required to connect to a new housing development. 2. Investigation of public „Support Measures“, which financially assist these developments. 3. Discussion of future scenarios particularly for „Single-family-settlements“, in the context of a possible energy-crisis (“Peak Oil”, sudden rise in energy-prices)
Domestic Heating Market 2020
Quantitatively assess the space heating market until the year 2020, considering the Austrian energy- and climate-protection goals with special emphasis on the role of the heat-pump in the future energy-mix.
Joint Working Group Energy Efficiency And Renewable Energy
Two research partners and companies from different fields such as a utility, a bank, a construction materials merchant and a housing company of the same region are developing new joint services in order to help customers to increase energy efficiency and renewable energy use.
Development of a central visualisation-tool for domestic energy and resource-consumption (ZENVIS)
This project analyzes, if and in which way the central visualization of domestic energy- and resources consumption can lead to a cut in consumption and how such a visualization and its implementation is to be seen technically or under the perspective of law and organizatory issues.
Monitoring and evaluation of the municipal Energy-Efficiency-Program (SEP)
Together with KWI (energy consultant) the OGUT is evaluating the implementation of the SEP, enactet by the Vienna City Council in 2006.
Energy-scenario 2050
In the context of this project, OGUT together with DENKSTATT created an energy-scenario for the year 2050. The development of the scenario was conducted on behalf of the AFI (Austrian FENCO Initiative, consortium of energy suppliers and powerplant-constructors).
Peak Research- analysis concerning the scarcity of resources
There are increasing signs, that resources, crucial to future development of the economy and new technologies like fossil fuels or certain metals are getting scarce, or at least that the amounts produced will not be able to meet rising future demands.
Ways to the application of electricity and heating without fossil fuels until 2020/2030
A contribution to the ongoing discussion. (German only)
Strategic support „Energy Future“ and design of an energy-model
On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) the OGUT is buiding up an energy-model that allows strategic decisions and putingt emphasis within research- and technology programmes. Based on Excel, the energy-model enables to assess and quantify the impact of innovative technologies and therefor to come to findings concerning the relevance of the very technical options.
IEA-Expert Group on R&D Priority Setting and Evaluation
Expert-group, lead by Dr. Herbert Greisberger in the context of the commitee on Energy-Research and Technologie“(CERT) at the International Energy Agency (IEA). Members from 13 OECD countries for the alignment of long-term energy-research on the necessities of a sustainable energy system.
